Are you considering a polycarbonate greenhouse? Here's what you need to know.

Polycarbonate greenhouses are popular for a simple reason: they cope well with everyday bumps and mishaps. Unlike traditional glass greenhouses, polycarbonate uses lightweight yet strong panels. It provides better insulation and is more resistant to impacts and shocks. They’re also a safer choice for families with kids or pets, since the panels don’t shatter the way glass can.

Many owners mention how well polycarbonate retains heat, which is especially useful for extending the growing season. Polycarbonate provides much better insulating properties than single glass. This can help maintain a stable environment for your plants, especially in early spring or late fall when frost and large temperature fluctuations can still occur.

If you're unsure about the size of your new greenhouse, we often hear that owners have regretted choosing a size that is too small. So, it's always a good idea to choose a larger greenhouse than you think you'll need. This not only gives you more room to move around, but it also allows for better airflow and more versatility in the types of plants you can grow.

Where polycarbonate really excels

Insulation and climate stability. The double-walled structure of polycarbonate creates an insulating layer that retains heat better than single glazing. This is especially useful in colder climates.

Safety and general durability. Polycarbonate is very durable and difficult to shatter. This makes it a good choice for gardens where children and pets play, or if the greenhouse is in a place exposed to falling branches or strong winds.

Better and more even light distribution. Polycarbonate distributes sunlight evenly throughout the greenhouse. Even light distribution is one of the biggest advantages compared to glass, which can cause hot spots and uneven growth.

These are the challenges you may encounter as the owner of a polycarbonate greenhouse

Condensation and ventilation

Condensation can be an issue, particularly on cold mornings after a warm day or during humid spells. Condensation often makes the greenhouse too humid, which increases the risk of mould or fungal growth.

Fortunately, condensation can be prevented by ensuring that the greenhouse is well ventilated. This can be done, for example, by installing automatic ventilation systems that maintain good air flow. Ventilation in both the roof and sides of the greenhouse also helps to maintain a healthy environment for your plants.

Wind, weather and anchoring

Polycarbonate greenhouses are generally quite durable, but they can be vulnerable in strong winds if not anchored properly. Poorly secured greenhouses in stormy weather can suffer loose panels or even structural damage.

It is important to secure the greenhouse to a solid foundation to ensure it remains stable in severe weather. If you are in an area prone to high winds, you should consider adding extra reinforcements to the greenhouse. In exposed gardens, some owners recommend adding extra clips or bracing for peace of mind.

Size and layout

If you’ve got the space, it’s often worth going a size up. A larger greenhouse offers more flexibility when it comes to layout, i.e. more space for shelves, plant tables and even room to move around. In addition, larger greenhouses provide more room for air flow and can better accommodate different types of plants.

And here's the thing, even people who thought a smaller greenhouse was enough usually change their mind after a few seasons.

Is polycarbonate right for you?

Polycarbonate greenhouses are perfect:

• If you want something low-maintenance

• If you’ve got kids or pets running around

• If your garden gets hit by strong winds or falling branches (more common than you think)

• Or if you simply want better insulation to stretch your growing season, a big plus in early spring

Find the right greenhouse

Start by figuring out where you want to place the greenhouse in your garden, and how much space you need. (Remember to consider going up a size).

Once you’ve got the basics sorted, take a look at our models. They may look similar on paper, but in day-to-day use the differences become obvious quickly.
